Hi.

James, Dhani and I went down to South Carolina too meet the Disciple Christian Motorcycle Club.  Before this trip, my only contact with the MC community was through Sons of Anarchy and Gimme Shelter.  I had only a Hollywood sense of what it was all about.

I think that something that failed to materialize in the edit of the documentary is the work that the guys in Disciple are doing.  Yes, they are an old-school MC.  They are the army chaplains of the 1% world.  They set up their club in a way that they have and demand the respect of traditional 1%er clubs - through respect and adherence to the traditional ways - but instead of engaging in the more nefarious behaviors of the clubs, they go into the clubhouses and relate/take confession/administer to the guys in there. Not everyone needs to be saved.  But everyone does need a chaplain from time to time. That's what these guys are doing for the 1% community.

My main camera for this shoot was the Canon C300mkii with L-series zoom lenses.  I relied mostly on the 24-105 but switched to the 16-35 to shoot car-to-bike stuff.  For the sunset ride, I rigged a Miller tripod in the back of our 4Runner and rolled down the rear window.  I try to avoid shooting slow motion for most documentaries but the road was too bouncy for real time.  By shooting at 120fps on the C300mkii, I was able to create smooth footage even on the rough road.  Also, at 120fps the C300mkii crops in on the 4k sensor, doubling the effective focal length of any lens.  For the close-ups of the bikers at sunset, I had the 70-200 mounted.  Due to the crop factor of 1.6x and the slow motion, the full zoom of that lens was 640mm equivalent while traveling at 70mph.  Cool.

This was also my first opportunity to work with the DJI OSMO Pro kit with the X5 gimbal that takes MFT lenses.  I was extremely impressed with the image quality and stability this gimbal system produced.  The phone app left a bit to be desired on Android but it got the job done.  With a few accessories, I think the OSMO pro or the OSMO RAW could be a MoVi killer for documentary shooters.
