Hacking Tractors

The Right to Repair is something that people tend to agree on across political party lines. For this episode of the State of Repair series, we traveled to Nebraska and talked to a bunch of farmers and farm workers about the way that John Deere (and all the other tractor/combine manufacturers) have locked them out of the diagnostic software on their equipment.  The story was fascinating - during a hearing on the right to repair tractors, lobbyists from Apple and Microsoft showed up in the courtroom to fight against the American farmer.  Yeah...

I like to employ a 5' MYT Works slider on lowboy stands - with the C300mk2 on it, its still light enough that I can move it around unassisted if I need to.  Lara is always prepared to lend a hand also so it keeps us extremely light and mobile but we're still able to achieve solid sliding shots.

I also like to use the Osmo handheld gimbal for this type of shoot.  Its small, light and the image is good enough for web video.  While it sacrifices a bit of image quality with the cheap lens and small sensor, its a nice trade off for a cool camera move.  And I can carry it in my pocket while operating the A camera so I'm always ready to go.

As far as the content of the State of Repair series - its close to my heart.  I like to build things and repair things rather than buying new crap whenever its possible.  For me, its a bit of a hobby.  For a working farmer - the ability to maintain one's own equipment at any time is critical to survival.
